Tradicionálisnak az 1900-as évek elejének New Orleans-i archaikus jazz és dixieland zenéjét nevezik.
Azok is tradicionális stílusú együttesek, akik régi spirituálékat, balladákat és bluesokat játszanak.

The Traditional Jazz Band

The front line:
  • Cornet--carries the melody (later replaced by trumpet)
  • Clarinet--harmonizes above the melody
  • Trombone--punctuates the melody from below

The rhythm section:

  • Drums--keeps a steady beat
  • Bass--holds the sound together
  • Guitar--provides chord structure
  • (later replaced by banjo and/or piano)

[[Trad]]: (Traditional) the Jazz style of the of the early 1900s, known retrospectively as Dixieland. Used a marked 4/4 beat, triadic harmony, 'sectional' tunes (with numerous separate sections), simultaneous improvisation, largely I - IV - V type harmonies, etc.
